DJ Akhtar Exclusive Interview for EDMDroid Asia

1. Please tell us and our readers more about the nightlife in India right now in times of Covid, specially in your home town of Mumbai.

The nightlife in India now stands at a complete standstill as the country is going thru the 2nd wave of the COVID crisis and is in a lockdown phase.

The end of last year saw most of our cities and their nightlife running at the optimum - from November 2020 until the end of March 2021. But right now everything in Mumbai as well as the entire India is on a halt. In fact, Mumbai got it worst as we just experienced a very severe cyclone which has done considerable damage to infrastructure and property in my city. In fact, some personal damage has been caused as my brand new car got hit by a tree.

2. How long have you been DJing/Producing and what can we expect next from DJ Akhtar?

Gosh, it’s been ages, Been doing this for more than 3 decades now since 1989 I guess. Right now All I do is watch Netflix and connect with my friends. But yes I do keep reinventing myself from time to time. Here’s what you can expect from me.

I'm very unpredictable, I play multiple genres and I never plan my sets so you can always expect an element of surprise whenever I’m performing. I try and keep innovating during my performance and I definitely get inspired from my team members, my friends, and colleagues here in India and across the world. I never stop learning and I’m super proud to learn a lot from the 1000’s talented DJs here in India.

3. What has been your best and your worst gig experience so far. Be honest please.

So many great experiences come to my mind. Some of them would be:
1.Performing long sets ( of 8 to 9 hours ) in nightclubs.
2.Sometimes Performing 2 or sometimes 3 gigs in a day for weddings at times ( quite exciting ).
3. Performing alongside my Dj friends ( some of them are young and the new Gen DJs and some are my friends from over 20 years ).
4.Performing in different countries all across the world always excites me and I look forward to traveling.
5. To the time when I won my National award ( for outstanding achievement in the Music and Nightlife industry ) . Was an emotional moment to get a standing ovation from the entire room of people I look up to.
6.To the times When I cater to large crowds like for example we have the “Dahi Handi or Janmashthmi Festival” ( which happens to be the celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna ) and is celebrated annually with me performing from a console elevated 30 feet up in the air belting out tunes to a turn out of over anything between 25k to on a couple of occasions almost 80k people - the adrenaline the rush the excitement is so very heartwarming.

And there have been tons of bad experiences too when I get booed by the crowd or it hurts when I don't get paid ( and it still continues- there are clubs that haven’t yet paid me my dues from the past 2 years ).

Then sometimes there are moments where the gig is a flop show as the turnout is not as expected ( people assume that all my gigs are running packed houses but that’s not true ).

Just remembered a funny incident - Once I was performing at a water park near Delhi and I was jumping across the console and somehow managed to stretch way too much, thus tearing my shorts right in front of 8000 people which was pretty embarrassing.

Another low moment I recollect was when I had to perform on the day my grandma expired. It was difficult and I did it cos my word and commitment are all that mattered and I didn’t want the organisers to endure any losses on my account of not showing up for their event.

I mean many such moments and a lot of unaccounted personal sacrifice & compromise that most of us have probably made to reach where we are today.

4. If you had to choose, which profession would you be going with? DJ or something else?

Don’t know - I would probably be selling Street food on a cart.
But It’s Djing for sure. I don’t know anything else except djing.
It’s the only thing I know and more importantly, at least I think I’m doing it right.

5. Top 3 tracks at the moment?

I got 5 for you , been listening to a lot of different music apart from Bollywood these days.
Mele - Groove la afrika
No diggity - Lucas & Steve
Friday - Riton & Nightcrawlers
Wasted love - Ofenbach
Baarish ki Jaaye - B Praak

6. With which intl. act would you love to collaborate and why?

I'm Not into producing music cos I don’t have the patience nor the talent to do so.

I simply love performing in front of large crowds, nightclubs & the traveling that comes with it, but if I were to collab it would Probably be with a Paul Oakenfold, David Morales, Sasha, Showtek, Afrojack, Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Roger Sanchez for obvious reasons.

7. Are you keen on cooking up an exclusive mix for us and our readers ? (60min)

Would love to - definitely soon enough.

8. You happen to be the busiest DJ in India or probably Asia with almost 5 gigs ( or probably more ) every week from the past so many years + You happen to be the most respected & loved DJ in your industry. How and why?

I think it’s a blessing. I thank my team, my friends, colleagues, and my clients in India and all across the world for that. Most of my clients happen to be my closest friends now.

And almost all of them ( whether it’s a celebrity, socialite, industrialists, Corporate’s or multinational companies ) are all repeat clients who have hired me repeatedly from the past 20 odd years.

One good reason that comes to my mind for this is that they simply know I’m a dependable DJ. I think I’m approachable and I definitely cater to all requests ( even made during my sets ).

Other traits could probably be that I’m someone who can perform to small or larger crowds + for an unlimited number of hours without any fuss or conditions put forth.

I guess I’m interactive on the microphone so that helps here in India as people usually don’t get bored even if my music is terrible 🤣. There are a lot of factors involved.

The answer to the second part of the question is simple.
Being a good dj is fantastic but more importantly, being a good human being is way more gratifying. I’ve always tried my best to help others and this is the same love and respect that they showed me back with. They are my true strength. The love and respect I get from unknown DJs even in small rural areas across the country is so heartwarming. All they want is to be heard and acknowledged. I listen patiently and try my best to resolve some of their issues in the best way possible. I’m blessed to connect with all of them and get so much love in return from them.

9. What are your work-related plans for 2021, your career and beyond and how does the pandemic raging in India has impacted your personal and professional life?

Right now all of us Djs in India and I’m sure in most cities across the world are only focussing on getting back on our feet. We would love for our work to get started and things to normalise. A lot of families are depending on us. I have personally taken up a lot of issues to the ministry level here and hoping to get some positive response from them once the lockdown is over.

The impact of the pandemic is tremendous. It has hit us hard and it has hit each and every home and family. We as a community and industry are trying our best to help each other out just like any family would do in gray times.

10. Congratulations for making Asia's Top 25 DJs list for the 3rd time. Please tell us how you feel and what were the reactions from peers and fans?

I'm elated and feel great. Would like to thank EDM droid and everyone who voted for me for this immense honour. I’m happy to be a part of the list where I look up to so many DJs from this list from so many counties and get this great opportunity to connect with some of them too.

11. We saw you are getting much attention by news media and other platforms, please tell us more about it.

It’s part of what comes with the package I guess. Honestly, It’s just the love and respect that I draw from so many of my fellow DJs here in India. I feel blessed to know so many of them and I thank them for their love and respect. I love them all.

Many of them are unknown to me, they keep writing to me and I try my best to respond to all their messages. All of them are truly super talented and probably better than me. I look up to all of them. Being in the limelight and media is nice but being genuinely loved for who you are is a blessing that surpasses all fame and name.

12. Kindly list down all your social media handles here for our readers to check you out and to follow you of course. Thanks for taking your time to speak to us today.
