DJ Jason Stone Exclusive Interview for EDMDroid Asia

1. Please tell us and our readers more about the nightlife in the Australia / Indonesia right now and most specifically in your hometown in times of Covid.

The Covid 19 Pandemic has really hurt the nightlife in both Australia and Indonesia since its onset. In Australia some states still have a limit of 10 people at any outdoor gathering and 30 indoors while other states have a 2 meter seated rule ensure patrons can’t mingle. In Western Australia where I’m stuck now as we are not allowed to fly overseas, we have a 50 percent capacity limit on all clubs which is really hurting the bigger artists as venues are not booking them due to limited numbers allowed inside the venues.

When it comes to Indonesia its even worse. most venues in major cities have been closed from the start and don’t look like opening anytime soon. In my hometown of Bali some clubs have reopened but capacity limits are also making it hard for promotors and owners. Tourism in Indonesia is still closed so clubs are relying on local customers to sty afloat.

2. How long have you been DJing/Producing and what can we expect next from DJ Jason?

Ive been Spinning tunes now for a about 9 years, and producing for about 6 of those. To be honest I’m still learning when it comes to production, i started out making my own edits and mashups to try and stand out from the crowd and eventually started making originals. I guess like most producers I have a tonnes of unfinished projects in the pipeline but I’m hoping to lay some vocals down on my latest dance track and have it ready for when Asia opens up again.

Ive had some great feedback from the likes of Don Diablo, BBC1 Radio, Pete Tong, Judge Jules on a Base House track called Glimpse I released this year with another producer THC so I’m going to be pushing that Base to Bigroom sound in my future tracks.

3. What has been your best and your worst gig experience so far. Be honest please, don't hold back.

When it comes to the best that’s a hard one, I’ve been fortunate enough to perform for some amazing crowds in some world class clubs and venues. I think a festival I headlined for NYE a couple of years back in Medan Indonesia would be my favourite. we spent the day before doing stage rehearsals with dancers, mc’s and my Duo partner who was singing live in my set and it all came together perfect. The crowd was insane, the energy levels of everybody there where second to none. there was a huge pool in the middle of the arena and it was packed.

As for the worst well that easy, I was performing on the main stage at Paradiso Festival in Australia and playing peak slot. Id just taken over from Laid Back Luke and was super excited. Back in the day I was using Pioneer headphones, you know the ones with the big heavy curly cord on them. (Never Again) Well i was jumping up and down on the stage like a crazy DJ does when the cord hit the play button mid track and brought the festival into complete silence. I threw my hands in the air to try cover my ass as if id done it deliberately and grabbed the mic. I don’t think i fooled anyone that day. It sure thaught me to have a folder of vocal start tracks handy for future incidents lol.

4. If you had to choose, which profession would you be going with? DJ or something else?

DJ without a doubt

5. Top 3 tracks at the moment?

Blasterjaxx takes the win for the first two, one of their newest tracks “ Legion" just gives me goosebumps and the voice of Amanda Collis in their track
"Rescue Me" is just begging the crowd to sing along.
Number 3 would have to be the bigroom banger “Liang" by Carta

6. With which intl. act would you love to collaborate and why?

Norman Cook AKA Fatboy Slim for sure. His is energy and creativity is sensational. The way he captivates the crowd in his lead ups always blows me away.

7. Are you keen on cooking up an exclusive mix for us and our readers ? (60min)

Yes of course I’d love to

8. What advice would you offer aspiring DJS?

To be successful on a main stage you need to be more than just a DJ. You need to be a host, someone who takes control of the entire room or festival and decides what direction its going to take. Don’t be scared to pick up the mic and talk to the crowd. Interact with them, sing with them even if you sound terrible, remember so do most of them but together you all sound amazing. Remember Performing is about a journey we the DJ and the crowd take together, so putting your own unique spin on things makes the night more memorable. Stage presence is 100% the most important skill to have. beyond that stay humble and communicate well with your followers regardless of how long irk takes.

9. What are your work related plans for 2021 and your career?

I'm hoping much of the world is back to normal for 2021 and Asia is up and running again. For now its a wait and see game but getting back on the main stages across Asia is definitely my 2021 goal. Performing is part of who I am, so I’m head down tail up in the studio atm trying to create something unique that will push the longevity of my career far beyond 2021.

10. You were voting amongst Asia's Top DJs last year as well as bagging another award in Indonesia by another platform. How did this success shape or change your career and way of thinking?

To me the Polls are a popularity contest, there are thousands of talented DJ’s and producers out there who deserve recognition, but sadly don’t get it because they haven’t got the insight to what is really important. Winning several polls didn’t change my way of thinking at all, rather my way of thinking is the reason i was voted in. To me the people on the dance floor are the most important part of my career closely followed by all of the behind the scenes people who make a show happen. It doesn’t matter if your the club owner or the guy who cleans the toilets, ill give you the same respect and time as i do the fans on the dance floor. staying humble and taking the time to reply to the messages, emails and social media comments i think is the key to a good relationship with all those people.

As for shaping my career, one word BOOKINGS. when your voted the top of your class in any field your popularity defiantly grows as does the desire of clubs, and agencies to have you in their venues. I was already super busy but last year i flew 284 flights whiles on tour. Much of that is a result of being voted on top of those two polls.
