DJ Jason Dewey Exclusive Interview for EDMDroid Asia

1. Please tell us and our readers more about the nightlife in the Philippines right now and most specifically in Manila at times of Covid and how it is different from pre-pandemic times.

Hello to all at EDMDroid! Thank you for reaching out for the interview. Everything as of now here is basically still not open or on a limited use status. There are a few venues that are having occasional DJs with some distancing but nothing much at all is full go.

Before the Pandemic? Madness! You could go from one end of the town to the other where respective clubs and venues were full and everyone having a good time.

2. How long have you been DJing/Producing and what can we expect next from you?

I have been DJing and producing on some level for most of my adult life but did not take it on seriously until my professional baseball career ended about 12 years ago.

Performance-wise: I am taking a short tour in Vietnam starting next week (pandemic allowing)

Next will be some original releases that definitely have one or two singles with top labels in the industry coming out and also working on a new EP.

3. What has been your best and your worst gig experience so far?

I honestly can’t give you the best experience. I have been so blessed with getting to work and perform alongside so many huge stars that each time I have put all of my efforts into making sure that my set was good and would work well with the rest of the lineup that night. Each time I was in that situation it was one of the best times. But playing next to Tiesto was pretty special being the Icon that he is.

My worst gig experience is very easy. It was a Halloween party and it was a three-level party with a dj set up on each level. On level one when I played my first set only one CDJ was working and only one channel on the mixer was working so when you would mix the other side there was no sound. Then when I went to the second floor it was a lot of the same problem just cable wiring issues, speakers crackling, just awful. Then I finished it off on the third floor where nothing worked at all.

4. If you had to choose, which profession would you be going with? DJ, or something else?

I 100% always want to be involved in music production, composing, writing, and obviously DJing. If I absolutely had to do something else it would probably be something along the lines of coaching or some kind of sports announcer being a retired professional baseball player.

5. Top 3 tracks at the moment?

Save My Life ( feat. Lovespeake ) David Guetta, Morten, Lovespeake
Circus (Club Mix) by Vigel)
Rescue Me (feat. Amanda Collins) Blasterjaxx, Amanda Collis

6. With which intl. act would you love to collaborate and why?

Oh wow. That is so difficult to answer. I have such a huge passion and appreciation for the entire music production process. The final product of what these guys do time and again it’s just unbelievable.

DVLM, Garrix, Nervo, Armin, Don Diablo, Tiesto, DJ Snake, Calvin Harris, Diplo, Ummet Ozcan, Skrillex, Nicky Romero, Quintino, Alesso, Illenium

I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with a few of these guys thus far but as to who to collab with I have to pick two.

All-time Hall of Famer would love to Collab with Tiesto... He’s been in the game a long time. He has adapted and made adjustments in his music production and stayed fresh for many years.

A newer guy in the game that would be an absolute pleasure would be Illenium. Incredible range in dynamic with his music production. Incredible vocals tied in with a magical blend of music that is not stuck in one genre.

7. Are you keen on cooking up an exclusive mix for us and our readers ? (60min)

Yes, absolutely I would! My last couple that are on Mixcloud are hard dance-based. Obviously being located in Asia, I was hearing for the dance floor lovers. Maybe the readers can vote on what they would like to hear?

8. Can you please give us your perspective on “reading the crowd” or “reading the audience” and how do you go about that?

That’s a great question. What a lot of people don’t realize is there are many factors and variables that go into playing DJ set.

First and foremost you must realize where you playing and understand what level that you need to play. For example, if you were playing in a festival with 12 other DJs depending on where you were slotted will make a difference in how you play.

The second is the factors. Is the event outdoors or indoors? Is there alcohol at the event? Many times the temperature and duration that people are partying and also drinking will have an effect on their response and also maybe what you would play.

My goal is always to have people enjoy the journey I have taken them on during the set.

9. What are your work related plans for 2021?

Focus on only what I can control. Everyone is dealing with the same thing on some level and I just need to focus on all aspects of my craft and try and get better every day.
