DJ Lokyii Exclusive Interview for EDMDroid Asia

1. Please tell us and our readers more about the nightlife in HK right now in times of Covid.

For those who don’t know, Hong Kong “was” famous for its nightlife, highlighting our celebrity street - Lan Kwai Fong. Packed with bars and clubs, one next to each other; music can be heard across the entire street; people drink, dance and sing while arms over strangers’ shoulders indoors and outdoors.

The pandemic hit LKF hard, from full house to empty, from noisy to silent. Venues closing down one by one, the once dragons became the legends of the past.

Though it had been a really rough 2 years, it made the music fanatics hungrier than ever, and I got a decent time to lock myself in the studio, baking new tracks and be geared up when the time comes. New clubs are rising, shows and fests are back, tickets are sold out even under strict regulations, and tour enquiries have been landing in my mailbox lately! There is only good news and more to come!

2. How long have you been DJing/Producing and what can we expect next from DJ Lokyii?

I can’t recall when DJing hit me and became my passion, but it had been about 6 years since my first step on stage. Have been focusing on my sets, improving my stage preference and learning how to crowd control from gigs around the globe with different audiences ever since, committed to show and prove female DJs’ potential. It’s only been very recently to have the time to slow down, and being able to focus on producing tracks of my own. I can’t wait to see “Lokyii’s music” on the shelves, and surprise the world “Who’s Lokyii” very soon!

3. What has been your best and your worst gig experience so far. Be honest please.

Worst then the best - There was once a club gig, a VIP slid the volume all the way down on the master mixer during my set, and tried to pull me over to join his table violently, but luckily my manager reacted quickly as well the club owner stepped in, it was resolved peacefully and the staff were very polite andprofessional. I then refused to leave the club as offered, but to perform again as that’s what I came for, and not wanting to lose any opportunity to play on stage - though I think I did play a bit harder than usual in my second set hahaaa.

The best gig though has to be the tour to Australia in 2017! It was my first time in Australia, and also my first step on an international festival stage! The tour kicked off with a club in Sydney, another in Brisbane, and ended at Sensation Music Festival. There was DVLM, Deadmau5, Showtek and Don Diablo all in white! I still feel very lucky, excited and honored to have the opportunity to smash on such a stage!

4.If you had to choose, which profession would you be going with? DJ or something else?

I was always a challenger - I started modeling from a very young age, was lucky enough to be invited to different TV shows and dramas in Hong Kong as an actress, and also began my life as an influencer. My career lifted off quite well, everything was very smooth and right at that time, I found a new challenge and passion - DJing. I’ve been surrounded by DJing for so many years during my modeling days, there were times where the event DJ was female, and I’ve always admired them so much. The crowd were into her not because of her looks but talent, her showmanship on stage, and it was just as powerful or even more! I will always challenge myself no matter how old I become, but the fun I get from DJing was and is still sensational, I would choose DJing for sure.

5. Top 3 tracks at the moment?

Don’t really have a favourite track of all time, but here’re the 3 tracks on my playlist that iI kept looping.

1. Zedd - Spectrum
2. Marshmello - Shockwave
3. Justin Bieber - Intentions

6. With which intl. act would you love to collaborate and why?

Zedd for sure! Have been a fan of his tracks for so long, from Spectrum and Clarity, to I Want You To Know, Good Thing. Zedd’s songs are very catchy, easy to memorise and to sing along with. First heard him live in 2017 at Dragonland Music Festival, always thought he’s just a good producer, but NO! He killed it with sick flows and strong crowd control! The crowd went wild! It would be an extraordinary opportunity if I can learn from the master himself, and would be a dream come true if I can collaborate with him!

7. Are you keen on cooking up an exclusive mix for us and our readers ? (60min)

Yes for sure! Stay tuned! and maybe you will hear some sneak peaks of my coming up originals within… *shhh*

8. What are your work-related plans for 2021, your career and beyond?

As mentioned above, local gigs are back and more to come, have been in talks with a tour as well, but while waiting to be able to fly again, I’ve been 120% focused on producing my own tracks, and there will be a couple collaborations with other DJs that you might know of… STAY TUNED!

9. Congratulations for making Asia's Top 25 DJs list. Please tell us how you feel and what were the reactions from peers and fans?

Had just been very lucky, loved and supported by many. I would love to throw a big thank you to them and my fans again, you are all the reason why I left my comfort zone and stayed challenging.

10. We saw you are getting much attention by news media and other platforms, please tell us more about it. Your tracks have us in awe.

Kinda answered above, really just have been extremely lucky, to be loved and supported throughout not only my DJ career, but also modeling, actress, and influencer. And to thank them for years of supporting, big collaborations along with new tracks are on its way! I hope y’all will like it, and I can’t wait to share with y’all!
